Conway is the county seat of Horry County and one of the oldest communities in the region. Located along the Waccamaw River west of Myrtle Beach, it offers a historic downtown, established neighborhoods and expanding residential development within reach of the Grand Strand’s employment and attractions.
Downtown Conway is centered around Main Street and the riverfront, with locally owned restaurants, shops, public art and community events. The Riverwalk follows the Waccamaw River, while historic buildings and live oaks give the center of town a setting different from the nearby beach communities. Coastal Carolina University is located east of the city.
Housing includes historic residences, cottages, brick ranch homes, traditional subdivisions, townhomes, manufactured homes, newer communities and rural acreage. Buyers can find properties within city limits as well as homes in a much larger Conway mailing area, so location and jurisdiction should be confirmed.
Highway 501 is the primary route toward Myrtle Beach and can become heavily congested, particularly during tourism season and commuting hours. Highway 22 and Highway 31 may improve access for certain locations. Buyers planning to work near the coast should test the commute at realistic times.
Flooding is an important consideration because of the Waccamaw River and surrounding wetlands. Buyers should review flood history, elevation, drainage, insurance and road access during major weather events. Rural properties may also involve wells, septic systems, easements and private-road maintenance.
Continued growth is bringing new housing and commercial development. New-construction buyers should review future phases, builder warranties, HOA costs and what may eventually be built nearby. Older homes require careful inspection of roofs, foundations, electrical systems and renovations.
Conway offers a historic town center and a broad real estate market without being directly on the ocean. The tradeoff for more space or lower coastal exposure may be a longer drive to the beach.
