You Earned It, Use It: Honoring Our Veterans This Veterans Day

Every November 11, our country sets aside a day to recognize the men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces.

It's a day of gratitude, reflection, and recognition. And here in the Lowcountry, where military service is such an important part of our community, it carries special meaning.

The Quick Take

Veterans Day is about honoring service and sacrifice. It's also an opportunity to remind veterans that the benefits available to them through their service were earned through commitment, dedication, and sacrifice.

Service Is More Than a Uniform

Military service looks different for everyone.

For some, it means deployments overseas, months away from family, and the uncertainty that comes with dangerous assignments. For others, it means years of training, preparation, and readiness to answer a call that may come at any moment.

Some veterans served for a single enlistment. Others spent decades in uniform. Each made a commitment that deserves recognition.

And military service rarely affects only the person wearing the uniform.

Spouses manage households during deployments. Children change schools and make new friends with every move. Families miss holidays, birthdays, and ordinary moments together.

Those sacrifices are part of the story, too.

A Military Community We Are Proud to Call Home

From Joint Base Charleston to the many veterans who have settled in Charleston, Berkeley, Dorchester, and surrounding counties, military families have helped shape our region.

They are our neighbors, coworkers, teachers, business owners, volunteers, and friends.

Many continue serving their communities long after their military careers have ended.

Veterans Day gives us an opportunity to recognize not only what they did while serving, but also what they continue to contribute.

Benefits Are Earned, Not Given

There's a phrase that deserves repeating: You earned it. Use it.

Veterans have access to a range of benefits established in recognition of their service. These may include educational opportunities, healthcare, disability compensation, and home loan benefits, depending on individual eligibility.

Using those benefits isn't asking for special treatment. It's making use of opportunities earned through service.

In my work with homebuyers, one example I encounter is the VA home loan program. For eligible veterans and service members, it can provide an opportunity to purchase a primary residence with no down payment.

But today isn't about mortgages or transactions.

It's about making sure those who served know that their contributions matter, their sacrifices are appreciated, and their earned benefits should never be a source of hesitation or embarrassment.

A Simple Thank You

To every veteran reading this: thank you.

Thank you for the time you gave, the commitments you honored, and the sacrifices you and your family made.

Whether your service was recent or decades ago, whether you served at home or abroad, your contribution deserves to be remembered.

We are fortunate to have you as part of our community.

Jared's Take

Living and working in the Charleston area, I have the privilege of meeting veterans and military families from all walks of life.

One thing I hope every veteran understands is that the benefits connected to military service aren't favors. They were earned.

Whatever chapter of life you're in now, I hope you take full advantage of the opportunities available to you.

Today, though, I simply want to say thank you.

Happy Veterans Day.
